Direct relationship between IUCD removal and ectopic pregnancy.Myth or fact?

Firstly for those of you who are not familiar with what IUCD's are please click here

*********Let it be known IUCD's are not recommended for women who have not yet had children, or are likely to want children in the future.*******

Online there seems to be two schools of thought on this subject. Predominantly the concern is for women who currently have an IUCD and are worried about the increased risk of having an ectopic pregnancy. Some professionals argue that if you have an IUCD then you have a 5% chance of it becoming ectopic, as opposed to 1-2% if you do not. Other professionals are adamant that women are not at a higher risk of having an ectopic pregnancy with an IUCD because the chances of falling pregnant are so low.

What I am concerned about is the overwhelming amount of women who have had there IUCD removed for the purpose of trying to conceive and are falling pregnant within a few months and having an ectopic pregnancy. This is what happened to me and I have been researching whether or not there is a correlation. It turns out there are a lot of conflicting results and once again Im left to my own devices.

There are articles online that say this is not the case, including a study done in New Zealand in 1982 to determine fertility rates and complications after having a copper IUCD removed. You can read it here. In the article it states, in the 4 year study "The ectopic pregnancy rate was 0.7% among women who had their IUDs removed because of complications compared with 0.5% among those who underwent removal to achieve pregnancy." They also state that "overall, this prospective study suggests that a favorable return to fertility and a good pregnancy outcome can be expected after IUD use is discontinued."

Mind you they did say "good" pregnancy outcome...not brilliant!

I have come across a lot of women in forums across the globe, who have had their IUCD's taken out to conceive and have fallen pregnant very quickly only to miscarry or worse have an ectopic pregnancy. There is a midwife called Paula Greer who when asked what causes ectopic pregnancy she answers:
When the blastocyst implants anywhere outside the uterine cavity the result is an ectopic pregnancy. The incidence is about 1 percent of all pregnancies and is increased in women over age 35 and in women of color. Over the last decade the incidence is on the rise which may be attributed to the increase in sexually transmitted diseases and the use of antibiotics. Factors which increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy: blockage in the tubes from scarring from previous pelvic infections, abnormalities of the reproductive tract, and IUD users.

The risk in IUD users seems to be the greatest in the several months after IUD removal so it is wise to practice other methods of birth control several months after an IUD is removed before attempting pregnancy.

Another article I found was a woman trying for medical malpractice legal advice her story is simple:

Hi,
I had the Mirena IUD inserted about 2 1/2 years ago.
My husband I and were very cautious about getting any form of birth control because of the side effects. After doing intensive research we decided to get the Mirena IUD. We already had two children that were 15 months apart so, we wanted to wait a couple of years before our 3rd child.

To our surprise, after the removal of the IUD we became pregnant 3 months later. 2 days after we took the pregnancy test I noticed I was bleeding. I called my OBGYN and they immediately started taking test, come to fine out I was have an Ectopic Pregnancy.

We were devistated because we trusted the research that was done on the Mirena IUD. Nowhere did it ever state that after the removal of the IUD that it can cause an Ectopic Pregnancy. We have two other children that were anticipating another sibling.

The lawyers response was disgusting to say the least:

Ectopic pregnancies occur for a variety of reasons. One of the reasons is a disruption of the normal process such as an IUD or scar tissue as a result of an IUD. The second could be infection or scar tissue from an infection.Endometriosis and fibroid tumors can cause an ectopic pregnancy as well.

An ectopic pregnancy from the use of an IUD is a known risk although it is relatively low. Your risk of a subsequent ectopic pregnancy doubles once you have the first.

Very truly yours,

Paul D. Friedman, M.A., Ph.D., J.D.

Why thanks Paul, have you completely missed the question? She is not talking about whilst it was inserted, she is talking about AFTER it has been taken out! Yes the risks are well known when its IN but its not well documented about the effects when its taken OUT!

There was a follow up comment which I found particularly interesting which you can read here..

There is another site which has some ladies with interesting experiences with miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies after having an IUCD removed. You can read them here.

Jury is still out on this one if you ask me. Please let me know If you have come here because you have experienced an ectopic pregnancy after having an IUCD removed or you know of someone that has please let me know!

Thank you

Janey.

    1. Hi I had the Mirena IUD in for about 4 years and had to have a hysteroscopy to have it removed in may of 2012. We got pregnant that next month and like you I also found out it was ectopic at 6 1/2 weeks and had to have my right tube removed. I know there are lawsuits going on now but with the ectopic after the removal they can't prove it was caused by the Mirena. I am also terrrified to get pregnant again. We could have tried in November but still scared to go through it again. I am sorry for your loss and I completely understand what you are going through!

    2. Hello I had my mirena removed approx 4 mths ago as it was lodged in my cervix n had caused a bacterial infection n that leading to kidney polarathritis which I was hospitalised for 5 days ova n they whilst I was awake no anthasetic pulled the Morena out. Then here on morning of 31.5 I woke in excruciating pain couldn't stand fainting vomiting etc the only ppl around me my 5 n 2 yr old I had to call for an ambulance n within 15 mins of arriving I was told I was having an eptopic pregnancy that had ruptured my tubes n turned my blood septic. There's no way I could save my child n the drs were lucky to save me. I lost my right tube n my left has been blocked since aged 19 so any chances of another child n sibling for my kids were lost needless to say we r shattered and wanting answers I blame the Morena n its removal but don't know what to do or who to talk to about this how do I take it further

  2. Thank you ladies! Im saddened by your experiences and your losses. It is hard losing a baby and a part of ourselves in the process. Within myself I am certain that the IUD played its part in my ectopic. Not that I have the money to take the manufacturers to court or anything. But....it scares me that women are finding this form of contraception more and more popular. I was offered the mirena when I was reacting badly to the BC Pill. Which surprised me because this was before I had my son. The whole appeal for me with the copper IUD was the "no hormones" but looking back now....it wasnt worth it!15 months after my ectopic...still no bubba! It breaks my heart. But...its still fun trying! My want for a child has now surpassed my fear of another ectopic and when you ladies reach that stage (which does happen) I wish you the best of luck and please let me know if you do have any! I need the hope! Takecare!

  4. I had Paragard inserted shortly after having my 2nd child. With my kids 13 months apart, we wanted to wait for a 3rd child. I thought the no hormones was the safest route in order to conceive again quickly when we were ready. 9 months later, I had the IUD removed and I was pregnant on the 2nd cycle of trying. That pregnancy resulted in a miscarriage at 6.5 weeks. After 6 months of trying, I conceived again which was ectopic. I was treated with Methotrexate and am currently waiting for my betas to reach 0. I am now terrified of a another loss, another ectopic or not being able to have another child. I honestly had no idea that there was a link to losses and ectopics after having the IUD removed. I was able to conceive both of my children in 1-2 cycles and never had fertility issues before having it placed.

  5. I don't know Ladies!?! Could all of our ectopics after an IUD be boiled down to being just "coincidences" ?? Who knows! It scares the hell out of me though! Thank you so much for sharing your stories!

  6. I had the Mirena IUD removed in April 2012 after having it in for about 2 1/2 years. Waited a few months before we started ttc. Got pregnant after 2 months, started bleeding around 6 weeks, thought I was having a miscarriage. Found out it was ectopic. Treated with methotrexate. Have been trying again for 5 months...no luck:(

  7. My story is like many of the other ladies. I had my Mirena removed in May 2012, after having it for the full 5 years it says it can be worn. My husband and I decided it was time to complete our family, and started trying to conceive right away. We got pregnant in that same month, but had an early miscarriage. My husband kept telling me it was just too soon after the Mirena removal. Then, I found out at the end of August that I was pregnant again, but in the middle of September I was rushed to the ER. There we found out I had an ectopic pregnancy that ruptured my left fallopian tube. The doctors estimated that I was about 6 week along. I was told to wait 3 months before trying again, which we did and got pregnant that month, but miscarried. Then, I was told to wait another 3 months again. In March 2013 we conceived our daughter, born on November 30, 2013. We now have 3 daughters. Twin 7 year olds and a 7 month old.
I pray that all of you ladies get your happy ending to your life of trying to conceive.

  8. I had Mirena for about 2.5 years, I had it removed and started trying to conceive. It was removed 09/13 and I was pregnant 12/13. I soon found out it was ectopic and treated with 2 doses of methotrexate. There is no doubt in my mind that there is a correlation between the IUD and ectopic pregnancies. Too many coincidences in my opinion.

  9. I had my Paraguard IUD for 3 1/2 years. Got it taken out Aug 3 2011, by Aug 30 2011 we had a positive test.. 7 weeks I started bleeding, it was ectopic in my left tube I was treated with methotrexate. Six months later (march 2012) we got pregnant again, at 5 weeks bleeding again.. this time ectopic in my right tube.. had to have surgery this time because I was bleeding internally.. they saved my tube but now almost 2 years later still no baby :(

  11. 20 year old, mother of 1 2.5 year old girl, had Mirena IUD inserted right away, per doctors' persuasive positive review of the thing, started having a lot of menstrual problems right away, bleed for about a hole month and a half, then stopped completely, with some spotting at very irregular times, it was allways messing my skin humor changes etc. After talking to my doctor and explained how I frlt about it, he didn't wanna remove it practically, after 3 months in November I came back and lied to the doctor telling him I wanted to have more family, he removed it right away and said I should get pregnant very fast and expected my visit on December 2013, after that I was the most relieved woman, my period came back as a clock and we protected ourselves. On february, I found out I was unexpectedly pregnant, we were so happy with the news, everything was going right and in the 6th week I had a very bad cramping and pain, went to the ER, but I was too early for the fetus to show up on ultrasound, so they sent me home with another ultrasound appointment, I went to that appointment and I was diagnosed with ectopic pregnancy, luckily I was diagnosed on time to save my tube, I had methotrexate once and it worked, now I'm pregnant again I just found out yesterday, because I was having alot of pelvic and abdominal pain went to the ER and they couldn't see the fetus again, I'm praying for this baby ti stay with me, let's see what they say on Sunday.

  12. I had the coil in after having my daughter in 2010, i had it removed around february 2014 and i got caught in march, i was bleeding for 8 weeks and i was having ultrasounds every week. I had a misscarage but i had a twin in my tube, it ruptured at 8 weeks, nearly died and lost my left tube. I dont think this is a coincidence at all something should be done im going to look into it xxx

  13. I had my Mirena for two years, my husband and I have healthy child who is 3 now so we were ready for another. After the removal of the IUD I because pregnant within two months. A week after I found out I was pregnant I started cramping and found out I had an ectopic pregnancy. I was 8 weeks. Along with the ectopic I had to get emergency surgery to get my left fallopian tube out

  14. I got Mirena after the birth of my first daughter, and had it removed 6 months later because of complications (non stop spotting, etc). We got pregnant immediately when we started trying and it ended in miscarriage at 6 weeks. A year later we got pregnant immediately again when we started trying and I had a ruptured ectopic pregnancy that I had emergency surgery for and lost my left fallopian tube.

Also, for those of you afraid to try again, there really is no way to get past that fear. We did decide to try again and I had blood work done every 48 hours to make sure my hcg levels were rising appropriately. it was the most anxiety stricken time of my life. Once ectopic was ruled out, I was still fearful of miscarriage, but I settled down a little in the second trimester. 3 months after my ruptured ectopic, we became pregnant with my daughter who is 14 months old. We may even try again for a 3rd, but I'm sure I will be terrified again all thru the beginning. I'm hoping my chances (though higher since i had ectopic) are lower than the norm since the entire tube was removed.

  15. I got the Mirena after my daughter was born, in Sept. 2010. Had it removed 4 1/2 years later, in Feb. 2015. Had one menstrual cycle as my doctor recommended, then started trying to conceive and had a positive pregnancy test April 10. Joy was short-lived, as I started spotting 5 days later. They didn't see anything in my uterus, but doctor said I had free fluid which could be making it harder to identify a pregnancy on the scan. Been doing blood work every 2 days and HCG levels are dropping. Doctors still won't say if this is a miscarriage or ectopic, praying I find out before I'm in emergent pain requiring surgery. Scared.. even more after seeing how frequently this is happening after mirena. I asked so many questions about Mirena and all my healthcare providers have said it's safe - but I'm not so trusting of that anymore.

  17. I'm going through the same thing I had the copper iud removed in June and I became pregnant in October just found out a week ago it was an ectopic pregnancy. And had to get the methotrexate shot. This has just broke my heart has anyone continued and had a child after I'm so sad to read this. I really want a baby and ik I can't go through this again.

  18. Same thing happened to me. I had the CopperT for 10 years. It was removed July 2015. I started trying in September 2015 and it was successful. I started having dull cramping pains on my right side and then bleeding. I had an ultrasound and no sac was in my uterus. After being admitted because of pain and bleeding I was diagnosed with ectopic pregnacy at 7 weeks and received the MTHX shot. Im not scared to try again but my fear is how many chances do I get to "safely" try?? Had no idea that there was a correlation. Very unfortunate!

  20. Hello my name is onasha , i jad my mirena placed june of 2010 just 6 weeks after my daughter. No true issue in june of 2015 i had it removed . in October of 2015 i found out we were pregnant but my levels were extremely low, so i went in for an every 2 day beta test , at my last beta test my levels had drop never really going up . so i decided to have the mythx injection which i had two dosages. This was in my left tube. In February of 2016 we learned we where execpting again EXCITED but worry because of prior ectopic in October, every thing seem normal until yesterday i had slight pain after some shopping , went to the bathroom and had some light brown bleeding , alerted because of prior ectopic i rushed to the ER, and ultrasound was done and this time it was in the right tube , Im only 23 and i dont think i would ever be able to give my daughter a sister or brother. Im too afraid to try again,i dont wanna be go thru this again. At 17 and still in high school to prevent any more children young i thought the mirena was the best decision, but now it could of been the worst. The doctors are giving me alot of hope but i dont trust it ! I know they state the mirena doesnt cause ectopic pregnancies but after reading all your stories i believe it be the key cause of my issues now. Im going try to stay positive and hope that one day i will have another child .

    1. Hello sorry for your lost and everything you have been though. Wanted to share my story also. 2010 I had my son at 16 and got the 5 year Mirena after to proven myself from having a nothing child young. Just about 5 years later "last june" me and his father decided to try for a 2nd we got iud removed and in early Nov found out we were 5 weeks. My 6 week mark I had some brown bleeding and went to er after having a low beta we did hcg every 2 days for WEEKS they ruled out ectopic and said misscarrying. End up being ectopic in jan it exploded with me getting blood work waiting for my levels to slowly drop needed emg surgery had my left ovary & tube taken out. I just turn 22 and we wanted to try again after a few cycles and end up with a pos. Test 2 weeks ago. And now I have brown bleeding again my levels are rising but not doubling my dates are I would be 5 almost 6 weeks now with a beta of only 521 . I go back to the doctors friday and just want an ultrasound and not wait as long as we did last time per my old doctor because I don't want to lose my right ovary and or tube this time I'm only 22 and have a 5 year old almost 6 and not sure if I can give him a sibling:( I wish I never got the iud to begin with.

  21. Hi.

I had mirena inserted May 2013, 4 years after my 2nd daughter was born. I got it removed September 2015 because we wanted to try for the third child. We waited one full cycle as the doctor recommended and tried for 2 cycles, we changed our minds and went back to protection (condoms). I got a missed period in February and a very faint positive pregnancy test, we were happily surprised and nervous from our history. I called the doctor office that week to come in and was told I would have to wait 2 weeks after my missed period in order for them to see anything. I told them I had a previous ectopic and wanted to make sure this pregnancy was in the right location, but they said if I have any pain before my appointment to call them.

The pregnancy turned out to be another ectopic and I had the tube removed. That was on Friday and I'm still home recovering.

When I see my doctor at my 2 week follow-up I will ask him if the removal of my iud contributed to my 2nd ectopic. My left tube was suppose to be healthy and I was able to have my second daughter after my 1ST ectopic where my right tube ruptured and became non-functional.

  22. Wow! So glad I found this. I just had my right tube removed due to an ectopic pregnancy! The IUD was removed in early December of 2015. I had it removed due to horrible side effects, such as migraines, dry skin and hair, and mood swings. I opted for no oral birth control to allow my body to regulate itself. My husband and I were not planning to conceive- we avoided "fertile days", which was difficult at first because my cycles went from being regular and 28 days total length, to 23-26 days. Nevertheless, we were completely shocked when I took a precautionary home pregnancy test at the end of March, 2016. Shockingly, it was positive! We have a blended family, four children total. We thought we shouldn't have one together due to child support obligations to two of those four children, and so that we could give our two (I adopted his that he had custody of, and he adopted mine) children the time, attention, and "nice things" in life. Our two are 10 and 7 years old, and his youngest is 5. So, even though financially we can handle it, we were concerned about the age differences! BUT- once we found out we would be having one together, we were ecstatic!!! Of course, we will try again in the future. Sadly, we found out yesterday my pregnancy was ectopic at the emergency room. We met with the OBGYN this morning to discuss our options. We selected surgery, considering the probability that my right tube would be permanently damaged, and would likely result in another ectopic if it remained. This also gave my doctor the chance to check the health of my remaining tube. Luckily, my left tube appears completely healthy with high chances of successful pregnancy in the future.
I was WELL AWARE that IUDs would more than likely guarantee an ectopic pregnancy if I got pregnant while it was in my body. This is the first time I've seen information of the IUD increasing the chance of ectopic pregnancy AFTER its REMOVAL!!!!! Why in the world wouldn't Bayer at least put it in a disclaimer?! "It MAY increase your chance of ectopic pregnancy, even after removal"?!?! That's ridiculous!!!! I KNEW something was wrong when I got my first blood draw and my hcg was only at 34, on 3/22- the morning after my positive home pregnancy test!!! I had only had 3 periods since the Mirena was removed. My hormones had been out of whack, but I never even considered ectopic pregnancy!!!! I thought I had the same chance of one as the general population!!! How deceitful of Bayer to not even disclose the possibility!!!! I certainly would have at least taken a lose dose birth control pill! And now I've lost my baby and my Fallopian tube!!! My children were so excited, and now they've lost a sibling!! Our parents are devastated, as well as our siblings!!! I'm so mad, and I feel absolutely conned.....

  26. In October of 2012 I had my first IUD removed and had an ectopic January 2013, treated with two doses of Methotrexate. I didn't think they were related until recently...I had my second IUD removed in February 2016, got pregnant in March, and had my second ectopic in April, resulting in the loss of my baby and left tube. I'm absolutely convinced these were both due to the IUD removal. I will not be using any forms of birth control again aside from condoms.

  27. I had two coils mirena first one for 4.5 years the next for 4 years and then decided we would start to try for a family. Coil removed 3rd September 2015, first period 3rd October 2015 positive pregnancy test 7th November 2015 started bleeding 11th November. Found out it was ectopic and in right tube 4th December surgery needed to remove right tube the following day. It's seems very common that there is a positive correlation between ectopics after IUD removal. This should be on the literature. So scared to try again now.

Hey lades I just went through the same thing. I have one daughter that's 3yrs old. And I had started the skyla IUD in April 2015. Me and my daughter father got back together and he told me to remove the IUD.I removed the skyla IUD in June 2016. For two months I was spotting on and off, so I don't really know when I had a normal period. In the middle of August me and my spouse was both feeling sick and he was throwing up. He told me right away I think your pregnant, so I took a home test and it was negative.the being of September I started bleeding and had bad cramps and pain in my rectum. My spouse tried to help by offering everything but I was in so much I was going off on him like it he did it. I took a test again and came out negative. The pain didn't come back until Monday September 19th that same pain came back and went to doctor to take a test and it came back that was pregnant. I was happy and shocked at the same time. The doctor asked me when was my last cycle and I told her I don't know do to IUD removal.she told me to go to the ER because of the pain,So I did .at 1030 pm I went to the ER after getting a babysitter. I had my blood took and waited hours, doctor came back and told me to have a seat she wanted to talk about my results. I was told had a ectopic pregnancy. I was lost for words. Thank God I didn't have to go in surgery. I was told had to options, end the pregnancy or wait 4 days to see if anything change. After 30 minutes of thinking what to do, I went decided to get the METHOTREXATE injection. This was very pain to me because I never had a ectopic pregnancy before. My OBG told me to come here office this week on thrusday to see of my HCG levels went down. I'm so nervous and scared if we tried again to get pregnant it would happen again. Wish me luck ladies, and I'm sorry for everyone loss.

  30. I had the Mirena IUD in for seven and a half months. I got it removed in June of 2013. By September I was rushed to the hospital for an eptopic pregnancy that had ruptured. The doctors had guessed that the fetus was two-and-a-half months into pregnancy. I had bleed on and off for those 2 1/2 months and thought nothing of it. (My periods are irregular). I had to have what was left of my right tube removed. In may of 2014, I went to the dr to find out my left tube was pinched off in 3 spots. He ran a dye threw my left tube and cleared the blockages. In Feb of 2015 I had a c section to deliver my daughter. At the time of the c section I had my left tube cut by choice. All the heart aches and tears was worth it! My daughter is my world! She was worth it all! I wish you all the best of luck!

  31. I had a mirena insterted 6 weeks after i had my son on 9-9-08. (dr didnt say no since i had a complicated delivery ending in c-section. Having him two months after i turned 18 didnt hurt my case either) being positive i was done having kids for a long while, and my sons dad leaving the picture only 2 months later,i was pleased with the mirena. It was only a 5 year but dr told me i could keep it in for 7 and it would still be effective.. That it was! 7 years it took for the mirena to slowly make its way to the bottom of my uterus causing sooo much pain i couldnt even stand straight at work! Went my obgyn, she removed the mirena, and pain was gone. Then, the dr kept cancelling and changing my appt date and then refused to insert another one since i was now at a better age to have more kids and in a healthy relationship. after 6 weeks and a failed contraceptive i noticed i missed my expected period by a week. Yup i was pregnant and not ready for a second. (love kids but my one is all i could ever ask for) well, i expected the 'options' talk and made my decision. Before my doctor could even get me in to confirm the pregnancy, i experienced horrible pain. Had to call an ambulance since i couldnt even stand up straight at work! Found out it was an ectopic, got bloodwork, dr gave me methotrexate. Two weeks later my levels kept rising as if the baby was trying so hard to make it. I hated my dr at this point and hated myself. Depressed as ever, i dragged myself into an emergency room to get a second shot of methotrexate not being able to handle what i was doing to the baby. Eventually everything passed and i got another iud inserted.. But i know exactly how this feels and am sorry to all the women out there who have gone through the same experience. The mirena is in a way a big help to me for preventing pregnancy. Im getting married soon and we want one of our own but now i dont know what i fear more.. Keeping it inserted or what could happen after i get it removed...

  32. I conceived 4 children before mirena with absolute ease, no problems at all. Regular cycles always, little to no cramping. My children were all conceived within 1 to 2 months of trying, tops. Had the mirena inserted after 4th child. No period while it was in. No problems while it was actually in either. Got it removed 3 years later to begin trying for 5th.This was April 2015. All my problems began. Ovulation and periods were super painful after it was removed. The cramps would be excruciating.October 2015 fell pregnant after trying every month since the removal. November 2015, diagnosed with ruptured ectopic. Lost my right tube. October 2016 fell pregnant again after trying every month since January 2016. Miscarried November 2016. And now. Found out that I am pregnant last week. Was told this morning that I am miscarrying again. Do I blame the mirena IUD? Yes I do. Before it was inserted and removed I never had any problems whatsoever getting or staying pregnant. Something needs to be done.

  33. Firstly i want to say how grateful i am to have found this article. I am as i write, recovering from surgery after having my left falopian tube and ovary removed.

I had a copper coil fit in 2009 after having my third child. I was really happy with it and it served its purpose for seven years. However, in may this year the coil came out on its own. I wasnt too worried and late june i went to my womens health clinic for a new one. I was checked over vut asked to wait another four week until i haf the next one fitted. In the interim, despite having used alternative contraceptive i got pregnant. On friday 14th july i left work early with intense pelvic pain and pain in my groin. I had been bleeding very lightly since mid June but thought this must have been the start of my period. I went to my gp and saw a locum whom said it was just by body adjusting to no coil and sent me on my way. On Saturday u was aching all day bit nothing unbearable. I went to bed fine but at 2am i woke up with contraction like cramps. I couldn't urinate and i was having spasms inside my vagina and back passage. I woke my husband at three and after two painkillers and a scalding hot water bottle i finally fell to sleep at four am. On the sunday i went to an our of hours clinic and they did my observations. The conclusuon was that my body was adjusting. They checked for infection and gave me the all clear to go home. The next week i was okay but had pain on and off whilst at work. Then on Saturday 22nd i started with the pains again. They were so intense and distinct i was in shock and i went dizzy and felt sick and couldn't urinate again. This time i told my husband to go buy me a preganancy test and sure enough it was positive. I waiting for the bout if pain to pass and took myself to a and e whilst my husband looked after our children. I was admitted ied to a ward that evening. On monday afternoon i had a scan but the sonographer couldnt see anything in my uterus. She said my right ovary and tube were swollen which could indicate ectopic. Later the registrar said i would need further blood tests to track the increase in HCG. Tuesday dinner time these came back and the consensus was that the pregnancy was ectopic. The dr said he would do surgery, initally to investigate if the pregnancy was in fact in the tube and if so remove it. The pregnancy was there and the op took around two hours. I have had surgery before on my back but nothing prepared me for this op. I begged staff to put me straight back to sleep and i was eventually every drug they could safely administer in recovery. I am now comfortable and pleased this incident is almost over. I felt compeled to write as i am so shocked how many suffer like this after having their coil removed. I am utterly blessed to have three children already but my first pregnancy was a miscarriage and i remember the awful worry i experienced thinking i might never become a mother. Today has been awful and from here on out i will encourage woman to avoid the coil if they are planning on trying for future pregnancy. I was lucky that i listened to my body and persisted so that my situation could be dealt with early i dread to think what could happen if i had had a rupture. This post helped me over the past few nights when i was able to compare symptoms fron the stories in the comments.. .....i knew this pregnancy was ectopic. Good luck to anyone who is going through this awful experience. I think each and everyone of us is a warrior !

  36. I had my IUD in for four years. It took four months to get pregnant. I ended up in the ER at almost eight weeks pregnant with a half liter of blood in my abdomen due to an ectopic rupture. I lost my right tube that day. It was horrific...it took a month to recover on my couch with someone at my side 24/7. I couldn't pee without help let alone stand by myself.

    1. It happened to me again, this time the ectopic was in my left tube. I had six injections of Methotrexate in three sessions over a three week period to resolve the ectopic. The chemotherapeutic drugs didn't work for me and the only other option was surgical removal. My doctor discovered in surgery that the ectopic ripped through my tube causing internal bleeding. I lost my left tube that day...annnnd the ability to have children. My heartaches beyond words.

  37. I had my Paragard IUD for 7 yrs. I had it inserted after having 2 children 11 mos apart. It was a great option as I was unable to use any hormone type of birth control. As instructed by my doctor, we were able to have it removed and immediately start trying to conceive. I had it removed on June 1st and by July I was pregnant. It turned out it was an ectopic pregnancy. I decided to use methotrexate and it was successful. My ob still continues to tell me how rare they are and it was just a fluke. But I do think the IUD had everything to do with it. I wish there were more info as I still would like to try again, but I am terrified as I am not sure if there is permanent damage to my tubes.

  38. After I had removed the IUD immediately me and my partner tried to conceive and I did get pregnant it was ectopic pregnancy. about two months later I found out I was pregnant with my second child. We have a beautiful baby girl she came out just as healthy. so trust me it's not going to give any damage to your tubes. so you can go ahead and try to have another baby
